After the parent part of a part family is created, it is possible to instance a family member of the part family into an assembly using the "Choose Family Member" panel when the parent part is selected. The "Choose Family Member" display criteria is controlled by the selected "passing" variables when creating the parent part and resides in the internal spreadsheet.

Is there a way to control to have only essential parameters displayed in the "Choose Family Member" panel and not others that my be necessary to create the part?

Yes, if you use the new tools which were used to create the 'presentation' for items accessed from the Machinery Library. If you go to the GTAC software download site and access the section for the Machinery Library you'll find a document titled 'Standard Parts Creation Best Practice_v1.1.doc' (I've attached a zip file with this document and few other files to help get you started).

John,
The information was very useful.

What I discovered was in the “member select area” a tab was available named reuse library. In the reuse library, there was an option to add a library. From there, the part family would display in the reuse library window. Right selecting on the image of the part family in the reuse library tab, an option was available to create a “.krx” file defining the selection criteria. This worked flawless in native NX in which I was able to create the “Add Reusable Component” panel, however since we work with Teamcenter I could not get the “.krx” file to save. More than likely it is a system setting in Teamcenter since I could not save a “.bmp” image in Teamcenter. There were images in Teamcenter such as “.jpg” and “.tif”, no “.bmp” image. From the documentation sent, the “.krx” requires a “.bmp”. image

I did like ability of “filtering” only required dimensions in the selection criteria. Being able to filter in this manner allows the user to have all the relevant data in the internal spread sheet. Not being aware of this feature, I used the external spreadsheets for referencing dimensions that are not relevant to the selection criteria. There is one short coming to the “Add Reusable Component” verses the "Choose Family Member" panel. It is hard to determine the available selections. This being when one element is selected, several others may become not selectable. The other method somewhat gives a clue to what selections are available. Maybe I am just acclimated to the “other method”.

Questions
If and when I get the “.krx” file to save in Teamcenter for the “Add Reusable Component” panel, is the “.krx” file user specific or will all user access the same “.krx” file?

Thanks,
Shanesox

Hi Shanesox ,
Although i am more of a native NX guy but as far as i know if you wish to import part families inside TC then you need to use CLASSIFICATIONS.
I guess then you would be able to access the .krx file.

Kapil,

One minor correction, what I thought was the "member select area" was the resource bar.

What was discovered, in the Teamcenter version, was that in the resource part "part or udf reuse tab" was that the icon displayed is linked to the last released revision part family or if it is new, it will link to the non-released new. So, when I tried to ".krx" from the tab, the file is locked down so no "krx" is written. I did create a test rev-new part family, acts like it will write, does not give any error when "ok" is select, but does not work.

Also, I am curious on how to handle the revisions since the icon only point to the last released revision.

The answer to my revision question when using the resource bar "reuse" tab.

Note: NX is run under Teamcenter
The revision level for the part families shown in the "reuse" tab are control by the assembly load options. So that "as saved" is active in the assembly load options, the latest released revision of the part family will be item selected. However if the parent part of the part family is not released and you are permutating family members on demand, the the assembly load option should be set to "latest working".
