Chrome Vanadium Steel?

Hello,

I am looking at manufacturing a special 1/2 drive socket - the type that Gedore, Snap-on etc make. What would be the closest material available in bar stock that would represent the type of material that is used for these items?

I have only come up with EN40C (897M39) as a possibility. (It has quite a wide tolerance band on the vanadium content 0.1/1.3%)

The other question is why Chrome Vanadium? - Would 807M40 do the same job?

I know this is quite an open-ended question, but I would be interested to hear any views.

Vanadium is considered a "grain refiner", which means that it tends to keep the grain size small. Small grains are desired for just about all properties except high-temp. creep strength and hardenability (depth of hardening). Highly stressed parts such as springs are frequently made from Cr V alloys.

The alloy 6150 comes to mind.
