Is there away to edit a circular pattern and change the feature that was patterned?

Not unless you have used Group Feature then added one or more feature(s) to the Group. Once you create the Group Feature, you instance the Group instead of the individual features. When editing the group, you can then add/remove features as you wish.

IMO, it would probably take as much time to re-create an Instance as it would to call up an edit & select a different feature to replace the existing one, hence the lack of functionality that you're inquiring.

Well in this case I was adding another feature. I guess group is the only way to go, just have to remember to use that in the future so as to not have to delete and recreate the feature.

While it's easy to delete and recreate, there could be expressions and whatnot to maintain or downstream features that are associative to that geometry.

The way UG works, if I remember correctly is that if you include more than one feature in an instance it doesn't "group" them as one instanced feature....hence the availability of Group Feature, which is intended to be used for your particular situation.
