I am trying to change a Solidworks drawing using Solidworks Explorer. The idea is to use an exsisting detail to detail a new part. So right now the drawing is a copy of a previous drawing, and has been re-named. Now I’m trying to replace the part reference to a new part. The new part has already been renamed. Explorer tells me it cant do the switch because of a circular reference. I don’t know where that reference is or how to fix it. Any suggestions?

Try:
File/open/(browse to part)/select button "references"/delete references/open

You should never rename a SW file within Windows Explorer.
In your case, the easiest way is ... open dwg and its part. In part, do "save as", give new name. Go to dwg, do "save as", give new name. You will now have both as new name references correctly.
