Hello all. I've been asked to design a steel plate to support a 12'0" tall water tank with a 10'0" diameter. The framing has already been designed by others, but the tank manufacturer has said we need to put a plate under it. There is a 6x6 angle down the center of the frame (very rough sketch attached).

I've calculated that the water will weigh 748.8 pounds per square foot, and based on AISC Table 3-12, with a 5'0" span, that would seem to indicate we'll need a 7/8" plate. I feel like we shouldn't need anything nearly that thick, but am so far unable to come up with a way to justify anything thinner. Can anyone give me any ideas?

Are you designing the bottom plate in flexure? or as a tension element?... can you introduce a second angle to break the span up into thirds rather than halfs? Is the toe of the angle or the flat of the angle welded to the plate? [ponder]

Thanks so much, Joel. I was able to figure it out with the software.

Dik, thanks for your questions. I designed it as a flexure element. The flat of the angle will be welded to the plate.

Can you add another angle and break it down to 3 span... likely the plate will get thinner. [pipe]

@dik,

What does this mean?

"So strange to see the singularity approaching while the entire planet is rapidly turning into a hellscape. -John Coates"

I googled it and found nothing.

The statement was in one of my son's eMails, and I thought it was great, so I used it. He was unhappy about that until I purchased the right to use it.

"singularity —is a hypothetical point in time at which technological growth will become radically faster and uncontrollable, resulting in unforeseeable changes to human civilization."
