On 2 Feb 10 "vodeni" posted a question regarding high pressure pumping and pipig. I have a higher pressure and a lot higher volume of water to move in a pumping/storage case. Could "vodeni" tell me what pump he ended up using? Thanks

We´re working on a pumping/storage feasibility study and have no experience in such endeavor. It´s necessary to move 270,000 gpm a height of 1050ft with steel pipes 7,300ft long. We think it´d be necessary to split the flow in two pipes using pumps capable of moving 150,000gpm ea. Also to use multistage pumps. We suspect it´d be necessary to use 20 stages of 60ft ea which could be four pumps of 5 stages or five pumps of 4 stages. Total eight pumps of 5 stages ea, or ten pumps of 4 stages ea. Do you know of any manufacturer of multistage pumps with a digital catalog that we could consult so we can find out the size of such pumps?
More importantly, How would you, or any one else, do it?
 
If this is a real job, then I think it is time to approach a couple of reputable pump companies with your enquiry as this is a major pump project.
To put it into perspective you are looking at something like an installed power requirement of 75,000 Kw.

KSB might be another manufacturer. And they have a selection program on their website:
Be careful with selection programs which are provided by pump manufacturers. They cannot be anything else than just guide you in some useful direction. They cannot substitute engineering work.
 
An interesting problem, therefore, you may want to do a google search for the statistical data of the Northfield Mountain pumping-generating station, Northfield, MA. With four Francis type pump-turbine units, the total pumping capacity is 3000 cu.ft/sec or 1,346,400 gpm. at heads varying between 720 ft and 825 ft. It is a 1080 megawatt station.
