Is a valve made of 316L suitable for CL2 gas fluid?
If it is what is the maximmum temperature?
If it is not what other alloy will do the job?

Have a read of the investigation report into the Festus chlorine leak by the US CSB.

A flexible hose made of st/st corroded, leading to a huge release of chlorine from a rail car. It should have been Hastalloy.

Cheers,
John.

Hi John, can you direct me where I can find the investigation report?

Thanks

Our company which handles specialty gas is converting cylinder valves in chlorine service from SS to hastalloy.

the issue is the small amount of wet Cl2 and occasionally ferric chloride that occurs in vaporized and liquid draw offs. they create havoc with the 316 ss.

hacksaw is right. If you are sure the chlorine is dry and will always be dry 316ss can be used. If there is ever a chance of getting moisture in the system you need something else. The chlorine institute has some good information on materials of construction.
