Hi,

does any one have an explication for the expression of HG in 24-3 of Appendix 24, ASME VIII Div. 1?
Actually I don't understand why the term Hp is being subtracted there, I expect only H to be subtracted as the gasket get unloaded
by the force H as the pressure is applied (in analogy to the expression HG in Appendix 2 from the same code).
Does any one know any reference as paper or technical report behind this appendix?

Thank you
Ali

See the formula:

So it is circumferential force acting radially to separate the joint at interface. The applicable area is 2xcontact width x pi x diameter (G).
And for H:

So H is axial force at end. Applicable area is pi/4 x G^2.
For clamped joints H_p is applicable as you need to consider joint separaton force.

Engineers, think what we have done to the environment !

Thank you for your answer,

I know already what do Hp and H mean, my question was about the logic behind the formula.
