Hello,
When selecting a pump one should calculate the flow rate of the building supplied. To determine the building's supply one should select the longest piping distance and the the area where the most flow is required, right?
or it can be multiple areas «, or one should select all the areas supplied by the pipeline....the latter would require an enormous amount of flow whereas selecting the are with the most flow and that with the most head will result in a more economic decision, right?

If the site is not flat or the building is tall, you also have to be concerned with elevation.
 
The larger the service area, the lower the service factor needs to be. There is an optimum design point where you can assure you can get the required flow of each area to all areas.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. If it's not safe ... make it that way.
 
You also need diurnal and seasonal variation. Also when parts of the building may not be occupied (staged construction). Fire service would also be another demand.

There are various software packages that enable you to build a sophisticated network with goal seeking and event simulation to enable the number and size of pumps to be optimised. These should not be used by enthusiastic amatuers without understanding of fluid mechanics and code requirements. Garbage in garbage out prevails.

For experienced engineers they caan save time and allow different scenarios to be evaluated quickly.
