Hi Frds,

Design temp: 390 deg Celsius
Material : Sa 516 Gr70N
Can creep zone material be used for pressure vessels ?
is there code rule or standard for creep zone material required for FEA ?

Thanks

Another way to ask your question would be to say:

" Is usage of SA 516 Gr 70N acceptable for pressure vessel design at 390 degree Celsius (734F) ? "

(This material is Carbon steel plate and one of the most commonly used materials for pressure components

Answer:.... Temperature limits for this material depend on your specific code of record ... It would not be permitted for Nuclear Power Applications, which have a maximum of 700F

Applicability and Maximum Temp. Limits

The ASTM A516 Gr.70 (ASME SA-516 Gr.70) plates are applicable for the construction of power boilers (ASME BPVC Section I), nuclear power plant components (ASME BPVC Section III Classes 2 & 3), pressure vessels (ASME BPVC Section VIII Divsion 1), and transport tanks (ASME BPVC Section XII). According to ASME BPVC Seciton II, the maximum temperature limits and its application for SA-516 Gr. 70 are listed respectively:

ASME Section I: 850°F
ASME Seciton III CL 2 & 3: 700°F
ASME Section VIII-1: 1000°F
ASME Section XII: 650°F

Agree with MJCronin. Start with your Code of Construction.
