Classifying ER70S-6 as A-No. 1

Most filler metal manufacturers class ER70S-6 as F-No. 6, A-No. 1. However, both Mn and Si as listed in SFA-5.18 can exceed the limits of QW-442.

So my question is, in order to classify this wire as A-No. 1, do I need a certified MTR from the manufacturer for every lot of wire which we use in production? If this is the case, I am assuming that a weld pad made per the requirements of the SFA must be followed using the same shielding gas?

\Thanks in advance/

Yes. However, why do you need to worry about classifying this filler metal as an A-No 1? You can qualify the welding procedure using the AWS filler metal classification, as an option.

metengr is right....

This has been an ongoing problem for years. Read entire paragraph of Sec IX QW-404.5.

Talk to your AIA about same.

Thank you gentlemen, I figured this is not the first time this issue has surfaced.

The thing is, is that I already have a WPS qualified for F-No. 6, A-No. 1 and I also read a ton of our customers' specs that state something to the extent of "only A-No. 1 filler metals shall be used in production."

I don't know if these are older specs that have just never been revised or if the customer doesn't realize that this inadvertently removes ER70S-6 (technically). The other issue is that our wire manufacturer classifies it as A-No. 1, and in the past we have never asked for a CMTR. I will simply start doing asking for them per lot, that oughta make 'em happy!
