I did do a search, and I THINK I know what to do but I thought I'd better check.

Our IT guy who is not terribly SWx savvy, I THINK he tried to install SWx over top of an existing install. We're switching the workstation from one guy to another.

I had this issue way back when installing SWx2005. I had intalled a bootleg version of 2004 when I was evaluating SWx in general. (I know...I feel shame).

But when I went to install the legit copy, the registry already had the old license. My VAR was able to guide me on how to clear that reg.

So of course now, neither our IT consultant, nor our VAR are answering their phones. And I have a guy tiwdling his thumbs!

I would erase (or rename to be able to rollback) th registry key :"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\SolidWorks"

Win+R -> regedit -> the access the key -> rename it

And try to re-install

SW2007 SP5
Worksatation HP wx4300 2GB
NVidia Quadro FX 3450

Do a clean uninstall of SolidWorks. Install SolidWorks and then when SolidWorks 2008 asks for your number type in the correct legal number.

SolidWorks Pro 2008 x64 SP1.1
PDM Works, Dell XPS Intel(R) Pentium(R) D CPU
3.00 GHz, 5 GB RAM, Virtual memory 12577 MB, nVidia 3400
e-mail is Lotus Notes

If you use the IM (Install Manager) and put the serial number in there and click next and then cancel the install the serial number will update in the registry and you don't have to complete the install process.

Or you can go to Start > Run type regedit and hit OK
Then drill down to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\SolidWorks\Licenses\Serial Numbers and change the number to suit.

CBL - FYI, that is not suppose to work with SW08 anymore. They placed the serial numbers in more then one location.

We tested it recently and it did not work.

Well for whatever this is worth to the thread ....(oh and thanks for the responses BTw)

Spoke to the IT guy. HE was transferring the workstation from one guy to another. SO he says he "de-registered" the orignal guy and was re-registering it as the new guy. But it choked when he tried to re-register. Saying that the max number had been exceeded. So the suspicion is that someone may have "borrowed" a license and installed it at home or something, exceeding the limit....

Further investigation is required....and CD's shall be locked up henceforth

MMike1 ...

Are you using standalone licences or SNL? If standalone, a home installation is allowed. If SNL, a Home User Licence (HUL) is required.

Are you re-installing SW to the same machine or a different one?

Have you contacted SW support?

[cheers]

All is well.

The VAR FINALLY got back to us and released that particular license. We actually have more licenses (stand-alone) than users right now. It was just an unfortunate coincidence that that particular license got "re-used"....so I am told anyway.

But the VAR will not reporting us to Homeland security as Al Qaeda sympathizers or anything...
