Hi all,

See attached picture of representative part that I have. I'm curious of your thoughts.

This is a weldment. The tube gets welded into the clevis ends and the clevis ends mount to a receiving joint via the two slotted openings at the bottom and pin (two pins, one for each side).

I was planning on making the 2X slotted openings (the width) a datum feature, and the 2X holes a datum feature.

Would you guys agree with this approach or is there some other better functional set up of the datums?

THanks for the help.

dthom0425,

How accurately do you think your welder can position those slots and holes?

I understand your specification, but I wonder what problem you are solving. Fabricating and inspecting to assure each hole is perpendicular to its slot is straightforward. Positioning and orienting the second slot and hole with respect to the first ones will be a challenge, and this probably is a design issue.

If you are looking for precision, forget welding. If you are looking for the strength and simplicity of welding, forget those machined clevises.
