I am trying to understand the processing involved in the gasification of coal and want to be able to make calculations for:

1. Composition and temperature of gas leaving the gasifier

2. Overall gasifier heat and mass balances.

I would appreciate any advice on textbooks and/or papers that would help my understanding and show me how such calculations can be made.

Any advice on good software would also be welcomed.

The US Department of Energy has been pushhing coal gasification for years. Search the DOE for detailed analyses of sample projects. The data may be mainly economic but it is based on process designs which are usually described in some detail.

You can use a program called GasEq. I got it off the web, and its a pretty good equilibrium program. I think a high performance code like ASPEN is ideal, if you have $10,000 to acquire a license.

You could also try the technology suppliers, such as Texaco, to mention just one. If this is a serious project, they would probably be very willing to supply you with some good quality estimates of the gas composition you might expect from their gasifiers.
