I'm involved on a project in which monitoring wells will be installed on a large coal storage area very close to a beach.

Anyone knows what are the lab tests that will be required in order to verify if the quality of the underground water is being affected by the coal piled up on surface?

Or are there any lab tests that will need to performed to the underlaying soil?

Any standards?

I don't understand this question. Are you asking how to discerne the quantity coal fragments dissemenated throughout a soil matrix? You see coal is not a mineral, so typical methods for deerminative mineralogy don't apply (i.e., x-ray defraction, thin section, flame tests, etc.). I say the best bet would be in a wet lab where they can do some "organic content" test or maybe even a "loss on ignition" test.
