For the oil well pump jacks we manufacture, we have counterweights flamecut from steel plate. Whenever a question is asked about what material they should be cut from, the answer usually given is that nothing better than Cobble Plate is necessary. The requirement on the drawing is simply 1-1/4" Flat Steel. They are usually cut from CQ or Max 33. No one seems to be able to accurately define Cobble Plate and my searches have revealed many people who sell Cobble Plate, so I am guessing it is a real product, not just a cute notion from our people. Any suggestions of where to look for a description of Cobble Plate would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, K.

Cobble is when there is a malfunction in a rolling mill. I would guess that the note means that this material can be any grade of steel and does not need to meet any specific gage requirements.

Kinda like EdStainless heard cobble plate being used, mainly for counterweights on cranes and never questioned what it was. It was always flame cut with no welding so there was no concern.
I have two metallurgical and steel making dictionaries and neither defines cobble plate.

The last I saw purchased was from these people you might give them a call as they mention using cobble plate for CQ plate.

Edstainless,I agree with you on the term. Misrolled products were desgnated as cobbled and placed separately. Cobbling was high,in the wire rod mill, that I once worked.

Thanks All. This has been more educational then I had hoped. So... If I cobble something, I've put something together. If a Mill cobbles something, they have taken something apart. K.

Oh, and yes unclesyd, Eddie Kane Steel is a fine company. They have been supplying our counterweights for several years. The orange here is our product, and I am always happy to refer any one to them. But for all our years of working with EKS Cobble Plate has never been discussed. K.

kthree - Cobble is a term we use in the industry to describe the lowest form (and usually the cheapest) of hot rolled steel plate, bar. It is steel that did not make it through all of the plate finishing processes that would yield a traditional plate or bar. Reasons can vary from not meeting thickness, width, length tolerances to not having the exact chemical composition that it set out to have. Signs of cobble is usually unfinished (rolled) edges, varying type of surface conditions (pitting, scaling, etc.)Try Concord Steel for this product. We have been dealing with them for years. They have some of the largest contracts with the mills and secondary suppliers in the country for this product. They seem to have more selection and capabilities then Eddie Kane. I hope this helps.
