I have been unable to find any information on equipment pad design. I was interested in knowing what the proper procedure might be. Initially I thought you would design it similar to an isolated footing; however I would imagine there are lateral loads in relation to equipment vibration. I was also unsure about steel reinforcing because of bending moment (however this may be negligible due to the equipment pads being on grade).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Recently at the steelTOOLS site someone has uploaded a pair of excel worksheets to design foundations for machines, haven't ried them.

Respect the influence of the dynamic behaviour, make searches like foundations for machines or dynamic bearing capacity and books and articles will appear.

Best wishes.

Common factors affecting equipment pad design approaches: equipment size, type & intensity of loads, equipment support configuration (on leg/on skid), and characteristics of the underlaying soil. Once you have collected these information, you can analyze/design the pad as slab on elastic foundation, or use FEM programs.

If you are just getting started, get some help from senior co-workers. Also, a quick review on textbooks for foundation/reinforced concrete design is essential.

Ishvaaag: can you post a link to the steel tools sheets you noted; I cannot locate this.

Dik,
Here is a link to the main steelTools site within AISC. You have to register for access to the tools, but it's free and only takes a couple of minutes. Some of the spreadsheets are excellent, particularly those done by Alex Tomanovich.
