In simple terms;
A Code Case refers to the approved use of material, process or application that is specific and not mentioned in the current Code book section. Some Code Cases may actually be adopted for use by the Code book section after a period of time.

An interpretation refers to existing code language where something may not be clear or not addressed specifically for an application during fabrication.

An Interpretation is a response to an inquiry from a Code user about a topic already covered in the Code. It is an interpretation of the words that are already included in the Code.

Sometimes an inquiry will prompt the Committee to write new rules that address a topic that is NOT currently addressed by the Code but which is deemed to be important enough to be added to the Code. If we write and officially issue a new Code Case we have a limited amount of time to either include the new rules into the main body of the Code or to withdraw the Code Case.

For example, in the ASME B31 Code for Pressure Piping, B31.3, Process Piping we have issued Code Case 178 which addresses specific equations to be used in the calculation of stresses due to the sustained loads of weight and pressure. B31.3 is now working to incorporate those new rules into the main body of the B31.3 Code.

It is important for the user to determine if the jurisdiction into which the component or system is to be installed has explicitly accepted the Interpretation or Code Case before the design is attempted. It sometimes takes a jurisdiction some time to officially accept Interpretations or Code Cases.

Regards, John.
