One of our fans needs an urgent belt change, it currently has 6 pretty worn out 8VX-1900 belts, the issue is we have 6 spare 8V-1900 belts available right now, but I´m not sure of all the possible disadvantages of using 8V belts instead of 8VX belts in our application. I don´t have the actual motor and fan pulley sizes right now but they are at least 13 inches diameter (the minimum recommended by NEMA for our 200 HP motor), and the VFD driving the motor´s fan rarely takes more than 100 HP input power, according to the drive´s diagnostic screens.
I understand that cogged belts in general have a higher friction coefficient and better cooling capabilities, and thus more power capabilites per belt than envelope belts. On the other hand, I´ve read that envelope belts are less sensitive to misalignment than cogged belts.
In summary, what else should I consider when replacing cogged belts with envelope belts? I haven´t done the actual calculation, but with 6 belts at 200 HP we should be well within the HP-per-belt limit of either type of belt. Thanks for your comments.
