Hey folks,

I just have a few questions regarding cold boxes and their use in air separation processes. I really don't even know what their function is. Can somebody please elaborate?

Many thanks!

A cold box is like a fractionation column.

simplified:

Huge compressors liquify the air. This liquid is sent to the cold box (fractionation column) where it 'boils' off. Each gas has a different boiling temperature where it turns to gas and the location in the column where this takes place for each gas is where each of the take away lines are installed.
