Does anyone know the possible affects of higher Manganese (Mn) levels in 1008-1010 CRS?

I received a lot with almost double the level as a previous lot and I'm wondering if this would make the material more porous when pretreating/cleaning for Ni plating.

Any help would be greatly appriciated.

It definitely will not make the steel more porous. Mn increases the strength of cold-rolled steel. It sounds like you received a lot of HSLA (high strength low alloy) steel instead of 1008-1010.
 
ASTM A 29 allows the Mn composition to range from 0.3 % to 0.6 % (by mass), so you could have double the amount and not be outside the standard's requirements. What were your actual measurements?

Agree with TVP.You have received a high strength steel without paying a premium at a lesser cost. However,during processing adopt suitable techniques to get a metallurgically sound component. Plating will not be n issue.

07 C
43 Mn
016 P
008 S

Not sure if that is % or what.

Yes, these should be expressed in weight percent amounts, and the Mn would be 0.43%.
 
hello everyone. I hope you all had a nice Thanksgiving!

Back to my inquiry. Do you all agree that with the material's composition that has the higher Mn shouldn't have an affect on the Nickel plating?

The reason I'm bringing this up is because my plating vendor insists it has something to do with the material and that their process has not changed. I really feel it has something to do with their cleaning solution, but I said I would humor their theory anyways.

Any additional information would be appreciated.

Agree. I would contact another plating company.
 
I agree that 0.43 mass % Mn in steel will not affect Ni plating.

Agree. Try another plating shop at the earliest.

One thing to consider is the the surface of the steel may be different, but this will not be due to any difference in Mn. The surface may contain more rolled-in scale, lubricant, etc. based on a myriad of issues, and may require different cleaning conditions in order to achieve proper adhesion.
