Hello everyone, hi

I would like to ask for your opinion. How do you do detailing for column transition in size and shape? For example, my lower column is rectangle of dimensions 350x1200 and it transitions to square (650x650) and some to another rectangle (650x750). What are the requirements for these kinds of columns?

Thanks for your help and advices.

I can think of four things you need to do:

1) Extend as many bars as practical from below into the column above. Add extra bars into the upper column which are cogged in the slab/beam.

2) Meet code bearing stress provisions for the slab/beam.

3) Do a strut and tie check in both orthogonal directions and provide additional tie reinforcement in the slab/beam if necessary.

4) Then show typical details of your requirements at each type transition. Minimize the number of these details to avoid site errors.

Since the column section varies, you will most likely have a variable eccentricity at each column section. You will need to consider the eccentricity of the axial load at each section.
