Combined Neutrals

Here's an oddity I came across. An electrician was called to a house, because of lights flickering. He came to believe there was an open in the neutral of a 2-wire branch circuit. But he was unable to locate and correct the open. So, he jumpered the neutral to the neutral of another 2-wire branch circuit, in an existing outlet box.

Which sections of the NEC did he violate?


Another question, please. Why is this forum titled "IEEE (electrical) Code Issues Forum"? Wouldn't "NEC (electrical) Code Issues Forum" be more appropriate?

BtW - I've visited several forum sites lately. For most of them it's readily apparent where to find the best forum for NEC topics/questions; but not for this one. It seems that there should be a separate forum titled "NEC Code Issues Forum".

NEC is part of (or recognized by) ANSI/IEEE codes and standards. There are two distinct worlds out there, IEC and ANSI/IEEE for electrical codes/standards.

IEEE seems is very appropriate as this is an international forum, as EEJamie stated.

And yet you found it It seems to work out OK since we have an IEC forum and NEC questions pretty clearly don't belong there.

(I suppose NEC questions could be posted in the NFPA forum, since the NEC is NFPA 70, and has always been primarily a fire prevention standard.)

I did find it - but only through some persistence. I've used the NEC for nearly 30 years, and have been an IEEE member for nearly 20, but I don't typically associate one with the other. For the places I've worked (e.g., A&E design firms & petro-chem), the term "IEEE" is rarely used, except pertaining to standards & reference materials.

But the term "NEC" is used much more frequently, especially when a discussion of Code comes up.

I'm just thinking from a keyword/marketing point-of-view; something that catches the eye quicker, for NEC-related topics.

BtW - DPC, how did you insert the "Quote"? I see no option for that (I'm using FireFox).
