Commpression for RF cummunication

I am trying to send a digitise a single signal over an RF link. The link is out by about a factor of 10 in terms of the transmission rate so I figure I need some compression. I have some processing (minimal for a MCU) available at the transmission end and the recieve is going to a PC.
Most of the matrix techniques used for pictures and video will be too intensive for the microprocessor to complete in time. Does anyone know a reasonable algorithm to use for this compression?

Perhaps you can start playing with phase shift keying???

The simplest compression is RLL Run Length encoding. If your sampling frequency is much faster than the data you are sending then you should be able to apply RLL and at least get a 2:1 or 3:1 data reduction.
