Dear All,

I go through MORTH specification. In clause 501.6, regarding compaction of bituminous materials, i didn't get initial or breakdown rolling, intermediate rolling and finish rolling. What i knew is rolling by smooth roller only for premix compaction. Please someone could clearify and suggest best practise.

best regards
govinda

Each rolling process has a purpose. Read publications from The Asphalt Institute or similar that describe the various rolling processes.

If you have a common structural gradation of hot mix asphalt, breakdown rolling is very important to achieve a durable asphalt layer. Finish rolling does not provide adequate compaction of the asphalt and if that is the only rolling that gets done, your pavement will likely fail prematurely.
