Hello,

I am an Ideas user and I need help for a 3D calculation.

Could someone do the following simple Hertzian contact stress calculation and give me the results?

A sphere (radius R = 5 mm) is contacting a plane. The material of the sphere and plane is steel (E = 196000 Mpa, Poisson's ratio = 0.29, Fty = 1000 MPa). A load of 10 N is applied to sphere.

Theorically, the maximum contact stress should be equal to 960 MPa.

Could someone give to me the results using ansys to do a comparison with Ideas.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers.

Hi,

I would do this simulation for you, but please tell me what Fty is?

Regards,
Alex

Hi,

many thanks for your help.

Fty is the elastic limit of the material.

Hi,

the maximum von Mieses stress that I get is 1000 Mpa. But my modell ist still coarse. I have a better modell at my home so if you want, I could simulate it and tonight I could post you the new results.

Regards,
Alex

Thank you.

Yes, I'm interested by the new results. Could you please give me if possible the minimum principal stress value (it is the stress which is normal to the contact surface.

Best regards.

Hi again!

The maximum von Mises stress I get is 968 MPa.

Is that a good result?

The normal prinicipal stress range is from -1610 MPa to -30330 Pa.

Alex
