Is there any way to compare V Notch Charpy tests?

The commonly available steel (to BS EN 10025) is tested at 27J at -20 degrees. The design code requires 35J at -5 degrees. Is there an approximation which would allow you to say that a 27J impact at -20 deg would similar to a ??J at -5 deg?

We have a materials department who will ultimately resolve this and probably get it tested but I wondered if there was a go by which is used as an indication. This is for my own benefit more than anything else.

No, you need to compare either full Charpy V impact curves or actual test data points.

Doesn't work that way.
Now if it met 35J at -20 you would be home free.

The only standard that I have seen that would allow you to do this for those energy and temperature requirements is BSI PD 5500 for pressure vessels.

OK, thanks for your help. I'll just leave to the professionals to deal with.

Off the record I would say probably, but legally I would say you have no hope of making that claim.
