Is it possible to verify if a DC motor has a compensation winding or not? (Assuming no nameplate info)

Yes,

If the pole faces have slots in them and if there is a heavy gauge winding (and if it is connected). Then you have compensation.

Sometimes the series winding is mistaken for the compensation winding. The series winding is also heavy gauge, but on the poles (not in the pole faces).

yes, it is visible by simply looking into the pole faces of the machine..

it is wounded on the slotted pole faces, a flat big wire, with small turns, connected in series to carbon brushes as well to series field winding.
