complex extrude cut help

I will try to explain this as simple as possible. I am currently modeling a part from a 2-D legacy drawing. now my problem is that I have to create a cut into a flat face that is coincident to the front datum plane, with a perpendicular thickness of 5mm now the tricky part is that the back side of this block is at a 45 degree angle. Now I was thinking of doing a shell of the part but the problem is that the left and right ends of the cut are not constant... is there a way to create a variable thickness "shell" so that the sides of the shell can be a different thickness than the continual thickness of the shell.... hopefully I didn't butcher my question

I think I follow you...

Try this:

1) Select the back surface of the part
2) Offset this surface using Edit--> Offset so that the offset surface is "inside" the part.
3) Extrude your sketch, but under the depth option, choose "To Selected" or "To Surface" and pick the offset surface (one of the two should work)

Oh... BTW

You can define a non-default thickness to specific surfaces in a shell feature under the "References" tab in the Shell dashboard.. I forgot to add that to the last post.

But the Extrude to Surface method works when the side walls of the sketch are not parallel to the side of the part.
 
Thanks for the advice but my problem I just found is a bit more complex..... I have drawn a sketch profile on the flat plane (front) plane. now the rear of the part has 2 45 degree angle cuts and the sketch that is on the front plane is complex in that it has angled lines as well as arcs in it, so a "conventional shell will not do I'm afraid. So now my question is.... can I make a cut to extrude "remove" material to bisecting planes (that is 2 or more planes that intersect with themselves) so imagine I have offset the outer rear surfaces (with the 2 45 degree cuts in them and one parallel 1 to the front surface) so that they face inward and now I want to extrude to my sketch from teh FRONT datum plane to the 3 offset planes inside my block

The first method should work - provided you select all of the angled surfaces when offsetting.

The Extrude will keep removing material until it hits the offset quilt.
 
If it is a complex cut such as compound angles on multiple sides. I would use surfacing to create the cut.

Create the individual surfaces of each side, then merge the surfaces, then use quilt to cut the solid.
