Good Evening everyone:

I need a reference book or find information in designing a composite deck floor system using steel bar joist and concrete reinforced slab. Can anyone lead me in the right direction? Any information provided will be deeply appreciated.

Thank You

Vic-West has a website that allows you to indicate the deck span, the concrete topping thickness and the type of composite deck and it will output the permissible loading.

Typically with 1-1/2" deck and 4" total thickness 2-1/2 conc and 1-1/2 deck, you can span 6 or 7 feet. It is then a matter of designing the joists accordingly.

It is also possible to space the joists at 2 or 2-1/2 feet o/c and use a material called V-rib form with 2-1/2" or 2" concrete topping.

Who is Vic-West? I was kind of looking for a manual to help with the design as well as someone giving me tips on what to look out for when designing this type of floor system?

Thanks for the reply dik

Do a web search for vic-west... they are a company that makes steel roof and floor deck. The sheet steel building institute also used to publish a manual for composite steel deck design; I don't know if this is still available.

How is it usually done today? Is it thru the use of structural computer software that have Nucor list of steel bar joist as a design option? Is it hand calculated? What do you use when designing bar joist to act in composite with concrete floor slabs?

Peace

The loads (dead loading and live loading) and deflection or vibration requirements are usually stipulated and the joist supplier provides joists accordingly. They are generally designed for the specific job.
