COMPOSITE JOIST DESIGN

Hi,
I am looking for a reference about composte joist design. I know how to design composite beam (composite action between slab concrete and I-shaped beam with shear stud), but I am not sure that the same concept can be used in case of open-web steel joist. Any good references to read?

The Steel Deck Institute (SDI) publishes standard load tables for composite steel deck and concrete. Sorry, I don't have their website but I'm sure you can search for it on the web.

TENG - I found our book on the subject and its produced by Vulcraft. Its called "Composite and NonComposite Floor Joists, dated 1996.

There are a number of composite steel joist systems out there, but from my experience, all are proprietary systems. The manufacturers will provide you with design guides and weights of the systems for various loadings and spans, but section properties, etc., are not given. The design engineer fills out data sheets for all the requirements of the systems, and the manufacturer designs the proprietary composite joist.

Please note, the manufacturer will not check the vibrational properties of the system. The design engineer should use the weight/depth information given in the manufacturer's literature and use the SJI vibrational design procedure to check the serviceability of the system. Often, a larger joist than suggested by the catalog will be required to satisfy vibrational requirements.
