Compressed air system - What is this? 1

The attached photo is of a compressed air system. What is the brass-colored fitting?

In the upper right in the piping system? Looks like a valve to me.

Looks like either an injection nozzle (eductor type) as it appears to be a screwed 1/4" nipple. Either that or come sort of non return valve would be my guess.

Is that an open hole facing the camera? This could be for some sort of instrument probe (temperature?, pressure tapping?)

Also: There's usually a good reason why everyone does it that way
 
Oh, and you're right LittleInch -- that hole is generally a 1/8" FNPT gauge port.
