Compressive Flange Support

Hello all,

I am working on a project to renovate an existing freight elevator and am trying to use an existing beam (W8x13) to support a floor in the unused portion of the existing hoistway. The existing span is 11' and Mmax=5 k'. Does the metal deck we are planning to weld to the top flange (compressive flange) count for reducing the Lb to less than Lu. Thanks for any advice.

You can consider the compression (top)flange as being laterally braced if the deck is properly welded to the beam (it does not need to be continously welded). Also make sure that metal decking is provided along the entire length of the compression flange.

Since the beam is part of a shaft, make sure that the metal decking does not stop short of covering the entire width of the flange. This situation often occurs in shafts and other slab openings

Are you planning to take advantage of composite action? If so, take a look at how you will weld shear studs with the metal deck.

The existing beam appears to have plenty of capacity without considering the composite beam. Thanks again.
 
Don't forget to check the existing beam connections as well.
