Hello friends, greetings! I need your help. My arrangement consists of an I-beam, which is completely embedded in concrete with the flange top surface exposed. A steel wheel (with cylindrical surface) slowly moves over the surface also applying a load of 400 kN on the said surface. Obviously the cylindrical surface of the wheel will make a line-contact on the surface of the I-beam. Literatures suggest to consider such arrangement as a beam over an elastic foundation. I have found out how to calculate the bending moment and deflection of the beam caused by the point-load (correctly calling it the line-load). However literatures also suggests to check the web of the beam on pure compression caused by the load. But I don't know how. Precisely putting, in order to calculate the compressive stress on the web, I need to know the load and the area over which the load is dispersed at the depth just below the flange (i.e. where the web starts). The load is given, however I have no idea about the area over which the load will be dispersed. I need your help. Thank you in advance.
