Hello there

I have been working on an assembly and today, my computer all of a sudden started just crashing right down (i.e. shuts down completely as if the power cord was pulled) everytime I save the assembly. I am totally confounded as to why this could be happening. It wasn't happening before today. My machine is fairly ok, if the not top-of-the-line, in terms of hardware specs.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

You need to give us specs. Windows, RAM, video card, SW version and SP, etc

Specs are:

SolidWorks 2001+
Windows XP (5.1, Build 2600) SP1
P4, 1400MHz, 512MB RAM
Display adapter: NVIDIA Quadro2 Pro 64MB
Display adapter driver: Version 6.5.7.3

I am not sure if it is a problem connected with SW or is my machine is messed up...

well, now it looks like it might be a problem with my PC. Just now, I didn't have my SW running and while I was browsing the internet, computer just abruptly shut right down! When I started it up again, it shut down again, this time even before I logged into windows XP. Finally, I started it up again and managed to write this message...

I am not sure what's going on. Please advise.

Are you sure you aren't kicking your power strip under your desk?

Have you read faq731-376 to make the best use of Eng-Tips Forums?

No, I don't move my feet around that much...this is happening very randomly. And it's happened about 10 times in the last 3 hours, so I don't think I could have shaken the power strip...

1) Try changing your power strip.
2) Have someone check your computers power supply or just swap it with a known good one.

Now my computer has gone even worse - it doesn't even get to Windows login page. Every time it starts up, it asks which mode I want to start in (safe, normal, last good condition, etc). I tried selecting all the options one by one but it just restarts itself over and over again without me even touching the keyboard! Do you think my OS needs major repair?

thanks

You might want to try reposting in forum233 "Computer engineering & other topics".

If you have a boot disk, try to get to the c:\ prompt & dig around.

Right now probably you need make a major OS repairment but it seems like one of your memory ram cards is bad, i have this problem in a couple of computers and the problems goes away, if you only repair your OS most likelly en problem is going to come back. But at this point probably you need to do both.

I would upgrade: the video card to 128mb, SW to 2004/2005, RAM to 1 gb min, XP Prof, and check to make sure that there is not a power overload on the outlets you plug into ... i.e., don't have refrig/coffee mkr/toaster/PC's on same line. And check what others suggest above. Also, clean register/temp folder.

I wonder if SW01+ even supports XP. XP wasn't out when SW01+ was... SW OS list doens't go that far back. That would be a good question to ask your VAR if you have one mkmech.

Sounds like you may have a virus of some sort. I was having the same problem with a PC running XP but did not have SolidWorks on it. I am ashamed to say it was also a copy of XP and not the original, I have since purchased an original XP disk and loaded SP 2.0 and the problem was resolved. Although this was after reformatting my hard drive and doing a clean install of XP.

Hope this helps.
