If you are using software for ASME Section 8 code calculations and the software manufacturer has reviewed the software for compliance with appropriate code edition and addenda, is this sufficient to comply with the requirements of the code? Is the addressed in the Code?

The ASME Code holds the Certificate holder responsible for the accuracy of the calculations. Not the software manufacturer. It is a common practice to have a set of manual calculations to check the computer. It is also common practice for ASME team leaders to put the requirment for manual calculations in the Certificate holders Q C Manual

aclark- I agree with you that the Certificate holder is responsible for his/her calculations and they must be verified and controlled in a manner acceptable to the AI.

However, your point of view requiring manual calculations in all cases is out of date. Further, all of the Joint Reviews including Nuclear I have participated in for the last 5 years, manual calculations have not been mandated. Most manufacturers would fight having this in their QC Manual.

Does the Certificate holder need to verify? Yes. Can the local jurisdiction require it? Yes. Does it need to be performed to the satisfaction of the AI? Yes.

The Code is gradually addressing more and more electronic
data. There are some good programs out there and it should not be required to redo acceptable work if all the requirements are met in any manner.

Hi aclark (Mechanical) and deanc (Specifier/Regul)

Do you know how components that don't have a direct calculation for t(required) (Appendix 2 flanges, cone shell junctures nozzles etc) are handled?

What SOFTWARE application is good for ASME SCETION I, POWER BOILERS, Deaign re: PG-27, PG-28,PG-29,PG-30, PG-31; and PFT-13.
