Concrete Cover To Rebar

Hi

looking for advice on cover to rebar on a 130 mm concrete slab with 8 mm lapped rebar.

i was warned about not having less than the 35 mm rebar specified so i ensured that we had sufficient cover with the maximum being 50 mm when poured he has now raised an issue with this as he is implying there is to much cover.

he is happy that the slab will perform but that the tolerance is plus or minus 5 mm.

any advice would be great

I generally use 2" cover, so 50mm.
