Concrete Crack Pattern at Base of Column

Hi, I’m a civil engineering student and I’m working on a project where we have to find and report on an example of some sort of material failure, (not any major structural issue) like concrete crack patterns for example. Well, I found these patterns at the base of these columns at my school and I’m not entirely sure why they’d occur like this. On each side, there appears to be a crack in the middle and then at the corner. They also appear to be perpendicular to the surface of the column. This seems oddly specific. My thought is that it could be due to some slight bulging of the column at the base, but I don’t know fully what’s going on underneath the ground where the footing extends down into, and I don’t have enough experience with structures to fully understand why this type of crack pattern would emerge, so I wanted to see what others with more experience thought of this. I attached some images. Thanks.
