Hello all,

I have a little bit of a debate dispute at work relating to concrete testing. I have always been under the impression concrete cylinder testing is required per ACI316 for everything that is considered structural concrete. And more specifically, I consider equipment slabs on grade to be structural concrete and therefore require testing. FYI this work is in California.

Is there any code reference that has exceptions to the testing requirement? Is there an industry practice for skipping concrete testing for "small stuff"?

Looking for some input. Thanks.

I don't know about the ACI, but the Canadian concrete code CSA A23 requires:

A23.1-14 – Clause 4.4.6.3 Frequency and number of tests

4.4.6.3.1

Not less than one strength test shall be made for each 100 m3 (or part thereof) of concrete placed. A minimum of one test is required per day for concrete of a single mix design. When high-performance or high-strength concrete is involved, or where structural requirements are critical, the owner may require a higher frequency of testing, which shall be defined in the contract documents.

I don't know if there are exclusions to this, for example, "If concrete tests are required, they must be undertaken in accordance with 4.4.6.3.1."

I believe the IBC gives the AHJ the latitude to waive Special Inspection for minor work.
