Can anyone recommend good sources of information regarding codes or standards for HDPE pipe and concrete foundations? A current project of mine involves piping fluid below grade from an outdoor storage tank and coming above grade indoors. The client has requested the use of HDPE pipe and wants to extend the HDPE through the foundation and transition to steel below grade, below the building foundation. I have not been able to find any solid information to determine if this is code compliant, a poor practice, or anything else regarding the matter. Thanks in advance for any assistance!

Transition to the steel pipe outside the lines of the foundation, so any future repairs can be made without digging up the floor slabs. Use a Link-Seal type pipe seal ring inside a steel-pipe sleeved opening through the concrete foundation.

Assuming you're in the US, the plumbing and mechanical codes discuss PE pipe, but those codes don't apply to process piping - which this sounds like. At the Plastic Pipe Institute there's a publication called the Handbook of PE Pipe with engineering info. Installation is covered in chapter 7. Thousands of miles of PE pipe is buried every year so the basic idea is sound. I'd transition to steel just above the floor so they don't have to dig anything up. PE has a large cte - so watch out for expansion issues if the fluid is heated or cooled.

NB: The AWWA has extensive resources on PE pipe as well. They only apply to municipal water & sewer systems, but may be of some help.

Thanks for the info all. I did find PPI's Handbook of PE pipe but did not see anything expressly prohibiting nor giving the practice the thumbs up. Unfortunately the client has shelved the project for now and stopped all contract work on it! I appreciate the swift feedback from everyone.
