Concrete Grain Bin Design

I am currently in my senior design course and we are working on a project to design a concrete grain bin 75ft in diameter 114ft tall. We are looking for some literature to help us in designing the roof. Our instructors are not knowledgeable in the design of the bins. Any help would greatly appreciated.

If you go with a domed roof, Dr. Arnold Wilson (from BYU I believe) has a great book titled "Practical Design of Concrete Shells" in which he goes into great detail of designing cylindrical grain storage walls as well as the domed roof. These are mostly for shotcrete applications, but they have been adapted for cast in place structures, particularly in high seismic zones.

Also try Structural Engineering Handbook by Gaylord & Gaylord. There is a chapter on steel tanks but it also addresses a steel framed roof.

The Gaylord and Gaylord reference is likely one of the best options for a design course, but if you want an actual code book you need to look to the EU. This is another good reference that covers the loading pressure during filling, unloading and the effect of the discharge locations.
