Are there concrete bloc masonry units that are made with concrete resistant to the effects of deicing (calcium chloride) chemicals, for use in the perimeter balustrade of an above grade exposed parking garage)? i.e. similar to cast-in-place concrete Canadian Standards Association (CSA) exposure type C-2? There seem to be block units resistant to freeze-thaw cycling, but we are not sure that there are units resistant to chlorides.

Any cement-based materials will have adverse reactions to deicing salts. One way to avoid this is decrease the use of calcium containing deicing chemicals or find a way to deflect it from the wall. The general rule of thumb is increasing the compressive strength and reducing the absorption of the units.

If you contact the Ontario Masonry Training Centre and speak with one of the staff engineers in the link below, they will answer your question. They are a very good resource for anything masonry.

Thank you. I will do so.
