concrete wall openings/headers 2

I'm searching for info on design requirements for concrete wall openings. Specifically I have to cut a 6' double door opening in an existing 12" wall with unknown reinforecment. I plan to use steel channels (bolted through) on either side of the header but are the channels sized to take the entire dead load of the wall above or can an arching effect over the opening be employed? Other than this condition I'd appreciate any good references to designing new concrete walls with openings. Thanks

Conservatively, I would use the entire wall weight and the superimposed load on the wall unless it is multi-story then I would examine the possibility of arching.

I would also recommend not thru bolting. It is too difficult to align with pre-drilled holes in channels. Use exp. bolts or adhesive anchors less than 1/2 wall thickness.

I also recommend core drilling the corners of the opening first, then run your sawcut into it. This will reduce the chance of a stress crack at the corners. It will also eliminate saw runby.
