I am lookin for a descriptive function on condenser water sumps in a utility plant. Can someone please direct me to a website for this information or somewhat explain.

thank you

mejia198021,

It has been my experience that the function of a condenser water sump, in a utility plant, is identical to the basin/sump in a cooling tower. The exception is that instead of the basin/sump being part of the cooling tower, it is usually a concrete basin/sump containing submerged pumps, located below the cooling towers.

For general Cooling Tower questions, refer to the following:

Cold water basin - A device underlying the tower to receive the cold water from the tower and direct its flow to the suction line or sump.

Sump - Lowest portion of the basin to which cold circulating water flows: usually the point of circulating pumps suction connection. Also known as Basin Sump.

It is hard to see, however there is a picture of this on the following website:

Refer to the "2-Cell Cooling Tower Pumps and Motors in Front of Concrete Sump". Notice the Cooling Towers are above ground with pipes running into the concrete sumps.

I hope this helps.

The glass is neither half full nor half empty; it is simply twice as large as it need be.

Support cooling tower from piers in the sump located to contact the cooling tower support points. Waterproof the sump walls. Provide deeper section to locate intake & screen. Design of intake is critical. refer to Cameron Hydraulic Data section on Intake design. It is on page 1-22 to 1-26 on the 16th Edition. Anchor pumps adequately and fill sump before starting pumps. Jog them first as a precaution. Provide galvanized sheetmetal skirt around cooling tower side and outer edge of sump to cover gap. Provide low level shutoff, low sump level alarm, high sump level alarm, cooling tower vibration limit switch, freeze protection heater; low sump temperature alarm, coling tower bypass control.Provide plastic grating on service walkways. Require access doors in cooling tower; access ladder; handrail; light; lightning protector; disconnect switches.
