I have a part with 2 configurations, a simple part and I have given a configuration based property to one of the config and I want the BOM to show part number from that Summary Information from configuration specific tab of the box, but it doesnt. It takes the description from there but not the Part Number. Can anyone help ?

And sorry - forgot to mention this - but I have tried that with a custom Excel sheet and with the templates that we have with solidworks .... on Solidworks 2004 SP2.1 and SP04

Replace your BOM column of the part number with a new column called the same thing but this time point it to the Custom property you made.

When you save your part that is the name that is placed in the Part number Column of a default BOM. You must remove or hide that column and make a new one.

if your working with the new BOM, you should be able to simply replace the field under column proerties to point to your new custom property.

Steve - thanks, but pardon my ignorance - how do I link it with a configuration specific Summary info.

I was looking at this closer. If you go to the Properties of the Configuration you can choose from there what is used in the BOM.

You get your choice of Document Name, Configuration Name, or User specified. I would use Configuration name and use the part number that you want to use in your BOM as the configuration name and make sure this option is seleceted in the BOM properties.

Looking into it, I don't see away to use Cofiguration Specific properties in the new BOM.

Yeah well that works if I choose Configuration name - that works and shows up in the BOM, but I added a different part number than the configuration name in Summary Information -> configuration specific tab and hope that would show up in the BOM, but I guess it just doesnt show up there and that Config specif part is not for part number and is for other options only. Thanks a lot !

I wonder in Properties dialogue box for an Excel based BOM what does the checkbox 'USE SUMMARY INFORMATION TITLE AS PART NUMBER' mean ?? I think by having that checked it should show what is given in Summary Information, config specific - PartNo.

The key word in that message is TITLE.

In Summary Information on the first page (Summary) there is a field called "Title:"

By having the box checked, the info in that Title field will be used for the part number.

MElam - thanks for pointing that out, but i realized my mistake there and tried that too, I am using Solidworks 2004 SP2.1 and even that doesnt seem to work, with the templates provided or with the template excel file I made. Does it work for you, if yes what version are you using?

That "Title" is not config specific, so it will not work.

What we do is use the method Scott described, except we use "user specified" instead of config name.

You can also do this if you create a design table and have a column with the header $Partnumber

It does not create a config specific property, but sets the config properties to user specified and fills in the value from the table.

Thanks a lot - that was very valuable info about having part numbers in Design tables, now let me re-phrase my question here ... In Summary Information property box, if we choose Configuration specific Tab and enter Part number, would that ever show up in the BOM and if yes - how?

Thanks

I got it to work - thanks a lot to everyone who helped in this thread, I have learnt a few new things here !

So what did you do? I was about to test, but my SWx is chugging on a PDM test right now so it's unavailable.

My suggestion was going to be - make a new column on the BOM template and reference your property. Either that or auto-create a design table, create the $Partnumber column and have it reference cells from your custom part number column.

Well that TITLE word in 'USE SUMMARY INFORMATION TITLE AS PART NUMBER' means that the title will be used if that file is a sub-assembly in another assembly cus the Title will be used instead of the config if that file is shown in the bill of material as a content. what I was making a mistake in was making just a part file with 2 configs and then generating a drawing with a BOM for the part, and that BOM doesnt take the TITLE, only if it is a part of an assembly.
