Conical Transition 1

Hello,

I have a pressure vessel with conical bottom end up with a nozzle. Include angle at cone bottom is 90 degrees. Does this vessel needs toriconical head with straight flange?
Accidentally the vessel got fabricated with cone without straight flange. Shell is directly joined with cone end. Do i need to do FEA to check the shell-cone juntion.

if i remember correctly, ASME requires.

any code vessel that has a cone with more than 60* included angle must have toriconical transition to shell.

any code fabricator that did this, should be looked at very carefully before giving any more work.

I would also check with their AI to find out how this happened.

If it is not code stamped, then any thing is fair game.

ASME code allow shell to cone junction without knuckle even if the half apex is greater than 30 degree (in your case, 45 degree). However it is not a good design and will require U-2(g) analysis, such as FEA. See Appendix 1-5(g).
