Connecting Goalpost column to existing wall - slotted holes??

Afternoon all,

I have a general query in relation to some detailing for a goal post column that fixes to an existing block work flanking wall. The column has been inserted to take the load to a separate eccentric foundation, as opposed to loading the existing inner skin of blockwork. However, I have advised to provide fixings to laterally restrain the column.

The contractor has come back and said he usually just uses screw fixings or resin fixings without slotted holes? I would assume best practice would be to provide circa 20-30mm slotted holes as per attached which ensures that none of the loading from the column loads the wall in anyway, however, still allows restraint laterally.

Does anyone have any experience with this? - They do not seem to keen on the slotted holes, however, I am being quite firm for the time being.

Thanks for any help.

I have attached some other useful snippets. Please let me know if you require any further details but the attached sketch should hopefully make sense.

If this is an interior application, I would not be concerned about non-slotted holes. If exterior application, use slotted holes.

As long as the wall can take it... and Hilti Hit-Hy 270 adhesive, and Hilti HAS E-55 or ASTM F1554, Grade 55S1 anchors. Use Hilti Hit-SC Screen tubes as req'd (I'm a Hilti fan).

Hi all, for clarity, the wall cannot take the load. Therefore, a structural column has been sized and allowed for. However, I need to fix to the wall to help laterally stabilise the column. I think I will specify slotted holes.

I think your slotted hole detail is appropriate and not too much to ask. You have a footing under the column and without the slotted holes, the vertical load goes into the wall instead of the footing. I'll add that you should be clear about where in the hole the anchor should be, otherwise you may end up with the column hanging from the anchor at the top of the slotted hole.

was a good guess... does anyone have a program that checks masonry walls, supported top and bottom, for small loads hanging off the wall?

Thanks Kipfoot.

Dik, I use Tedds, quite good for wall panel designs in general. More specific ones you will need masterseries or something similar.

thanks...

Liam1369:
Why not just tell the contractor to buy and install (at his expense) a W 14x730 column, that probably won’t need so much lateral support for the length and load conditions. And, then he won’t have to worry about all those pesky slotted holes.

@dhengr....LOL! Not sure the footing could handle the column.
