Hi all.

Any advice on how to connect a 3/8 thick A710 channel to 0.078 thick AISI 301L 1/2 hard, by welding? The members are around 70 feet long.

Thanks in advance.

trainguy;
I am going to ask the question regarding specific application because ASTM A710 is not material that is readily welded, like typical structural steels. This material is an age hardening structural steel that requires extreme caution for welding. What is your weld detail between these members? The filler metal selection is easy - a 309 stainless steel.

I would suggest you qualify this material for welding using AWS D1.1 as a guide.

This could be real tricky. You may see aging in the A710 and you will get HAZ annealing in the 301.
I guess my concern is what sort of loading will the weld be subjected to? The near-weld properties are going to be interesting.
309 is the filler choice. Does this need to be a continuous weld? My feeling is 'the less the better'.
