I have a condition where I need to splice connection for a beam. The beam is pretty long (roughly 90 ft) and has a long wait time for delivery. So, the contractor decided to get two short beam and splice it. However, the readily available beams are of two different grades (both with same Fy = 50 ksi, but different Fu). My question to you all is, can we use two different grades of beam in cases like this. Welding may be an issue to I was looking forward for all bolted connection. I am getting mixed answer from my colleges so wanted opinions from you all.
Please share your thoughts if it is an acceptable practice or not. Thank you in advance for your time and help.

I see nothing wrong with splicing the two different steels. Obviously:

1) Where Fu is used in the slice calcs, use the lower value of the two.
2) As you've intimated, make sure that any welding is compatible with the steel being welded.

I like to debate structural engineering theory -- a lot. If I challenge you on something, know that I'm doing so because I respect your opinion enough to either change it or adopt it.
