One of my latest projects is connecting a vertically slotted connection to support an HSS section laterally. The connection load is about 1.2K horiz in any direction. I'm suggesting something similar to the attached. I've got a call in to Hilti to see if this is appropriate for their SLC connection. Can anyone suggest a better means of connection? I don't know why the EOR clip angles are so massive for the light loading. There are 12 Hilti fasteners and the 1/8" sheet is pre-drilled.

I fundamentally dislike the detail. With the slip connection at the tube, you'll have a moment on the screw connection to the deck. Gross. I'd push to have those angles connected to something more robust that spans out to some nearby framing.

Concur, Koot... have suggested otherwise, but was the EOR suggestion. The connection will easily accommodate the design forces. Weld will likely increase to 3/16 to accommodate the 1/2" angle leg.

The connection might but the deck won't. When that 1200lb force is applied to the deck perpendicular to the flutes, it'll just fold up accordion style.

Yup thought that and have asked the EOR to confirm loading and direction specifically for that reason. I don't know what the roof framing is, but if OWSJ, the framing should go joist to joist... already suggested. Thanks...

I should have noted that I was concerned about using Hilti fasteners with a 1/8" sheet and pre-drilling the sheet to allow the tapping screws to go through...The concern is still the fastener. Can anyone suggest a fastener in lieu of the Hilti one?
